Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am concerned about my personal phone being subpoenaed. What does eFieldNotes do to address my concerns?

That is of course a valid concern and eFieldNotes does indeed take steps to minimize your exposure.

It’s no secret that police officers today are under greater public scrutiny than ever before. Your phone constantly sends, receives, and stores data just to provide you with cellular service. If any of this data becomes relevant to a criminal or civil legal matter, then your phone may be subject to subpoena. This is true regardless of the apps you have installed.

At the same time, the realities of police work (radio signal dead spots, sharing an already-busy channel, being on foot away from your MDT, etc.) sometimes necessitate the use of a cellular phone to communicate. Since most law enforcement agencies lack funding to issue individual agency-owned phones, officers often resort to using their personal devices.

Subpoenas are not unlimited in scope, this is where eFieldNotes comes in.

If you use a smartphone for work purposes, then it makes sense to compartmentalize the work content so it remains separate from your personal content. Unlike many other apps on the market, eFieldNotes takes extra steps to include under-the-hood features to limit your exposure such as:

  • Storing all data you enter into the eFieldNotes app in the app’s “sandbox” environment inaccessible to other apps without your explicit permission
  • Preventing iCloud backup of data you enter into the eFieldNotes app to keep all data on your device
  • Designing the eFieldNotes app to not autonomously send or share any data about you, your phone, or the data you enter into the app
